BMC History
Basingstoke Motor Club was started in the early 1990s by a group of motorsport enthusiasts who had been members of Portals Motor Club for some years.
Portals MC met at Portals Sports and Social Club in Laverstoke. The club was part of the overall sports and social club, and because of this we were restricted in how we could manage our membership, and what we could do with the money. We also wanted a name that reflected the area the club covered, and was something obvious that people could look for if they wanted to find out about motorsport in the Basingstoke area.
We have to register our thanks to Portals Sports and Social Club for years of support, and to Portals Ltd (now part of Thomas de la Rue Ltd) for finanical help and providing access to lots of other resources. And occasional use of their car park for autotesting.
Basingstoke MC took over where Portals left off - with a tradition of road rallying and a membership that was prepared to have a go at almost anything that involved a car, a map, and possibly beer! |

What do we do?
We organise a range of competitive and social events which are open to all sorts of people with all sorts of cars. The social events provide the opportunity to get together, have fun and give each other help and advice. From preparing a stage car, through starting out advice to what to do when you slipper slips, our members give each other help advice and support! |

What can I get involved in?
Glad you asked! We organise lots of different things, as well as socials. For most, you don’t event need a special car. Events are listed below: |
 |
12 Car Navigational Rallies
You follow clues which give you the route to drive. You need a driver and navigator, a car and a map. Beginners always welcome and always supported. |
 |
Scatters and Treasure Hunts
Scatters are at night, using a map to find clues, whereas Treasure Hunts take place in daylight and you find clues along a given route. Again, you need a driver and a navigator, a car and a map and beginners are always welcome and supported. |
 |
Road Rallies
The next step up from 12 car rallies. A longer route and more complex navigational clues. Again, you need a car, driver and navigator. |
 |
Autotests
Short tests of your driving skills, usually round cones, fastest wins. You only need a standard car and a driver for this one! |
 |
What if I don’t have a car?
Don’t worry! As well as the social events (which present the opportunity to talk about cars for long periods of time without fear of boring anyone), we also provide information on marshalling opportunities. In this way, you can get close to the action as you help with all manner of events. From national stage rallies to 12 cars, most events require volunteers to ensure their smooth running. Many don’t allow spectators, so this is the only (and a great) way to see the action. |

Interested?
Don’t worry if you’ve not done it before – we are an excellent place to start.
You don’t need a special car to have a go at most of our events, all you need is a road legal car and some enthusiasm.
For a taster, come along to our regular meetings on the first Wednesday of each month at the Queens College Arms or send us and email for a chat about the club. |
